WHAT IS FIELD SOBRIETY TESTING?
The standardized field sobriety tests are a series of three
tests:
- Follow pen with your eyes
- Walking heel to toe
- Standing on one foot
These tests have specific instructions and specific observation
points.
You should also know that the officer will be observing your every movement from the point of first contact.
The officer will be noting if your clothing is rumpled, are your eyes bloodshot, are there masking odors on you or in the car and your manner of speech. He will be paying attention to questions you may not choose to answer and general attitude.
It is possible to ‘fail’ some of these tests before you ever begin them—although the officer will not tell you this.
He will not tell you how you will be graded or what is a passing
grade. It is subjective, that is the officer decides if you will pass
and he already thinks you are drunk, otherwise he wouldn’t be asking
you to perform these roadside gymnastics.
