Aside from the penalties that are most commonly associated with a DUI—such as a suspended or revoked license, increased insurance costs, thousands of dollars in fines, and a criminal record—you may not realize that a DUI can follow you around the world and even complicate your re-entry to the U.S.
What Is Global Entry?
U.S. Customs and Border Protection have an initiative called Global Entry that enables pre-approved travelers to enter the United States with ease. Travelers who are approved for a Global Entry Pass enjoy an expedited customs process at airports. Instead of waiting in line, they are able to visit kiosks to scan their passports and/or U.S. permanent resident card, then scan their fingerprints for verification. Once their identity is verified, the traveler can then declare any customs before receiving a receipt and instructions to head to the baggage claim.
The Global Entry Pass is intended to make travel easier for people who travel frequently in and out of the country, but any United States citizen or lawful permanent resident may apply to be part of the program. A DUI arrest or conviction, however, will keep you from retaining or qualifying for a Global Entry Pass.
Protecting Your Freedom to Travel
If you are facing criminal charges stemming from a DUI or if you have been convicted of a DUI, you will be ineligible for a Global Entry Pass. If you had a Global Entry Pass prior to your arrest, you lose your right to keep it unless you win your DUI case and the charges are removed from your record. Hiring the right attorney is essential to protecting your rights and helping you beat your charge to get your life back as soon as possible.
