Arson is the crime of lighting a fire with the intent to destroy something.
Degrees of Arson
- First-degree arson is the most serious arson charge. It includes setting fire to an occupied building or another person, or a fire that begins in an occupied building during the manufacturing of drugs. This can lead to 35 years in prison.
- Second-degree arson is a drug-related fire, but in unoccupied building. This can lead to 25 years in prison.
- Third-degree arson is setting a fire for the purpose of insurance fraud, or setting fire to a non-building piece of property that is worth more than $50. This would include things like cars or bikes. This can lead to 15 years in prison.
- Fourth-degree arson is attempted arson. This can lead to 10 years in prison.
